Hey, this is Heather from the Renaissance English History Podcast, and this is your Tudor Minute for December 12.
Today in 1574 Anne of Denmark was born. She would become the Queen Consort of James VI/I and would become Queen of England. She was born at Skanderborg Castle in Denmark, and she married James in 1589. While there has been much speculation on the state of her marriage with James, she did her Queenly duty, and bore him seven children. After coming to England she patronized the arts, including the architect Inigo Jones, and his famous banqueting hall in Whitehall.
One interesting thing to note about her was that in Denmark they didn’t have the same tradition of royal mothers not breastfeeding their children, and princes and princesses were raised with their parents. When she bore her first child, Henry, in Scotland, she was sorely disappointed in having to send him off to his own household, and she was surprised and disappointed that she wasn’t allowed to breastfeed him.
