Tudor Minute February 14, 1539: Nicholas Carew faces Trial

by Heather  - February 14, 2022

Today in 1539 Nicholas Carew was tried for his role in the Exeter Conspiracy, and he would be killed later in March. Carew was a courtier and close friend of Henry VIII and he was one of the men who so molded Jane Seymour for her role as Queen, after falling out with the Boleyns. But life at court could be ruthless, and when Thomas Cromwell showed Henry letters that implicated Carew in a plot to put Cardinal Reginald Pole on the throne, Henry turned on him quickly. He was pronounced guilty, and killed on 3 March at Tyburn.
