Tudorcon attendees

What is Tudorcon??

Tudorcon is simply: three days of learning, feasting, music, food, dancing, and generally partying like it's 1509. And this year we will be in a new location, at the authentic Tudor home, Agecroft Hall, in Richmond, VA from September 20-22. We will bring together Tudor history enthusiasts from all over the world with their favorite authors, bloggers, and podcasters.

The mission of Tudorcon is to build friendships with other Tudor friends while learning from some of the leading authors, bloggers, and podcasters. Imagine three days of building new friendships with people who "get" your Tudor obsession. Who will laugh at your jokes about whether Tom Seymour shot Edward's dog, or if Anne of Cleves really was the ugly one. While also learning from leading historians talking on subjects ranging from Tudor handwriting to gardens to Margaret Beaufort!

How the Event Goes:

We start out on Friday evening with a welcome party. There is music and entertainment, a costume contest, Tudor trivia, and a chance for all of us to get to know each other. If you're coming on your own, you'll meet lots of new friends during the Friday night welcome party!

Saturday we start with talks at 10am, but there is a light breakfast provided at 9. We break for a catered lunch, with more talks in the afternoon. Saturday evening you're on your own to explore Richmond.

Sunday we also start at 10am, again with light breakfast at 9, and finish up at about 1pm with new friendships and memories, and lots of new Tudor learning!

SPEAKERS and ENTERTAINMENT

This is a sample based on previous Tudorcons. Some of these are already confirmed, and we have others we'll be adding - so this is a representation of the people you will see at Tudorcon!

The Venue: Agecroft Hall

Agecroft Hall is a Tudor manor house and estate located in Richmond, Virginia. The manor house was built in the late 15th century, and was originally located in the Irwell Valley, at AgecroftPendlebury, then in the county of Lancashire, England.

During an era when many wealthy American families were building extensive country estates emulating those they had seen in Europe, Mr. Thomas C Williams, whose business interests included tobacco, banking and shipping wished to build a true English manor house on his 23-acre estate. The manor house was dismantled, crated, transported across the Atlantic, and reconstructed.

The hall was one of three manor houses owned by the Prestwich family from 1292 when Edmund Crouchback, Earl of Lancaster, granted land on the banks of the River Erwell in Lancashire, to Adam de Prestwich. In 1350, Johanna de Tetlow, daughter of Alice de Prestwich and Jordan de Tetlow, married Richard de Langley of Middleton, after the deaths of her parents and brothers – possibly from the plague. The name "Agecroft", meaning "field of wild celery" was adopted circa 1376, the old name of Pendlebury being dropped for the manor but not for the village.

Frequently Asked Questions

Hi, I’m Heather, and I created Tudorcon! I’ve been podcasting on Tudor England since 2009 when I created the Renaissance English History Podcast. I’ve interviewed people on my show like author Alison Weir (whose book The Six Wives of Henry VIII was the first Tudor book I read, way back in 1995-ish!) and musicologist David Skinner. I am a pioneer in podcasting, and have spoken about podcasts at venues from the Sound Education conference at Harvard University to the Tribe conference for writers, to the Intelligent Speech Conference. In my professional life I work in the world of libraries, specifically consulting on the purchase of electronic resources and ebooks. I also teach podcasting – of course – for places like the American Library Association. I came up with the idea of Tudorcon in 2018 because I wanted a place to connect with other Tudor enthusiasts in real life, and create an event that was a mix between a Renaissance Faire and an actual academic conference. There’s all the fun of a Ren Faire, mixed with talks from historians, and new friends who share your Tudor obsession.
Your ticket price covers all talks on Saturday and Sunday. Plus the Welcome party on Friday evening with party food, music, activities (there will be a cash bar for those who want to indulge in some modern day ale). Continental breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, lunch on Saturday, and a private tour of Agecroft Hall. You will also receive a recording of all the talks, available as a download, so you can enjoy the talks forever, as well as fun giveaways and swag.
Tickets are non refundable. But they are transferrable, so if something comes up and you can’t make it, you can gift or resell your ticket to another Tudor fan. As with the vast majority of live events like concerts and plays, when you buy your ticket you are entitled to a refund only if the event is cancelled. It’s the same with this – if I cancel the event, you will receive a refund. But after you purchase your ticket, that space is reserved for you, and I will be ordering food and supplies counting on you being there. If you are unable to make it, you are welcome to transfer your ticket to someone else, or resell it, but I cannot give refunds. This is a hard and fast rule with zero exceptions.
Absolutely – A few weeks before the weekend we’ll be checking in to make sure we have a list of all the vegans, veggies, and gluten free folks.
Costumes are definitely encouraged, though not necessary (I’m not wearing one)! You’ll have plenty of opportunities to wear them, including the Friday welcoming party, and the Sunday feast.
I need help with choosing speakers, and general planning. Or, submit a talk. Just email me for more info (hteysko at gmail dot com)
