Tudor Minute August 12, 1588: Spain sails away

by Heather Teysko  - August 12, 2022

Today in 1588 the dramatic several weeks of Spanish invasion came to an end when the Commander of the English fleet Lord Howard of Effingham called off the chase of the Spanish Armada off the coast of Scotland. After the battle of Gravelines, the English had pursued the Spanish to ensure that they didn’t make landfall in England along the coast, and by early August the fleet was out of English waters. The English kept up the chase until it was clear that Spain was unable to land. As it was, they had to sail around the north of Scotland, ran into terrible storms, and lost most of their ships and men.
