Today we went to Cordoba to see the famous Cathedral and Mosque. There had been a church here since Roman times but after the Moors conquered Spain in 711, they built a mosque and for a while it was half Christian, half Arab, living pleasantly enough. Incidentally, in the 10th century, cordoba was the most cosmopolitan place in Europe. Just one of its 7 libraries had more books than the rest of Europe combined. The mosque is a great example of Arab mathematical genius…the first time double arches were used, which allowed the ceiling to be higher. After the Christian reconquista in the 13th century, they put an amazing cathedral nave with full organ and choir right in the center of the mosque. The columns were made of rocks from the destroyed Roman temple that had occupied the site previously. What a mystical spot, with thousands of years of worship in so many forms… #travel #cordoba #spain
