Hey, this is Heather from the Renaissance English History Podcast, and this is your Tudor Minute for January 2.
Today in 1492 the citadel of the Alhambra, and Granada, fell to Spanish troops under the command of King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile. The Moors had been a presence in Spain since 711, so it had been nearly 800 years since Christians ruled the entire peninsula.
Katherine of Aragon, Ferdinand and Isabella’s younger daughter, would spend much of her childhood at the Alhambra Palace, which was one of the most luxurious in Europe with springs and fountains and gorgeous gardens. The fall of Granada made Ferdinand and Isabella even more famous than they had been before, and solidified their legacy in history.
